AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" The No. 20 Auburn soccer team suffered its first defeat of 2017 when it fell to No. 13 Clemson, 2-1 in overtime. The orange and blue Tigers (1-1-1) totaled eight shots, including three on target in the 100-plus-minute fixture.
"That result is a heartbreaker," said head coach Karen Hoppa. "I thought we played hard. I thought we had the better of the play for a majority of the game, but give credit to Clemson; they got it done in the penalty box when it mattered."
Bri Folds scored her first goal of the season for Auburn, while Kristen Dodson led the team with three shots.
Sarah Le Beau went the distance in goal and matched a season high with three saves.
Auburn controlled possession for a majority of the first half, but it was Clemson (3-0-0) that struck first in the 17th minute.
Auburn nearly leveled just two minutes later when Dodson and Folds blasted shots inside the Clemson box, but they both were blocked. Clemson held a 1-0 lead at the half.
Folds equalized for Auburn in the 54th minute when she picked off a pass from the opposing goalie and then proceeded to chip the keeper from outside the box.
Auburn almost went ahead in the 61st and 63rd minutes as shots by Dodson and Courtney Schell were pushed away by the opposing goalie.
Despite one final push by the road squad, the match stayed level at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Neither team was able to register the deciding goal in the first overtime, but it was Clemson that capitalized two minutes into the second overtime, taking the result 2-1.
Auburn returns home for its next fixture when it takes on North Dakota Sunday evening. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
