Hugo Gonzalez, a freshman on this year's Auburn swimming and diving team, earned three gold medals at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis this past week.
Gonzalez, from Spain, took gold in the 100m and 200m backstrokes and 400m IM.
Gonzalez' 54.27 winning time in the 100 back broke the championship record of 54.30 set by Robert Glinta of Romania in 2015 and his 1:56.69 winning time in the 200 back shattered the championship record of 1:57.92 set by Italian Luca Mencarini in 2013. He also established a new championship record in winning the 400 IM in 4:14.65, besting the 4:14.97 set in 2013 by Joseph Bentz of the United States.
Gonzalez also earned a silver medal in the 50m backstroke, touching in 25.30, and took fourth in the 200m IM, touching in 2:00.61.
Previously this summer Gonzalez competed at the World Championships in Budapest, taking third in the 100 back (55.05), 26th in the 200 IM (2:02.78) and 32nd in the 200 back (2:02.41).
