For most college freshmen, starting school means adjusting to a new place with new people. But for new Auburn equestrian Caroline Hudon, starting college was the exact opposite. The Auburn native has been a fan of her hometown Tigers her whole life and is now officially a Tiger herself. Some of the Hunt Seat rider's accomplishments prior to joining the team include earning top National Derby ribbons and placing second in the equitation championship at the South East Medal Finals.
Q: How did you get started with riding?
A: My mom signed me up for lessons after my third birthday after refusing to get off the pony rides.
Q: What made you want to come to Auburn?
A: Auburn is my hometown and where my heart is ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" cheesy but true.
Q: Did you always plan on riding on a collegiate team?
A: The deal was, in order to continue riding, I either had to be on a team or find a way to provide the means by myself; I didn't expect the amazing group of people and support that would come with such a great choice. I believe in Auburn Equestrian and love it!
Q: What do you think growing up riding taught you most?
A: Growing up, riding taught me more then just physical strength. The mental and emotional challenges [you're] faced with when riding makes for not only a physically fit person, but a mentally fit person.
Q: What are you planning on majoring in? Why?
A: My intended major is agricultural economics with a minor in accounting. I want to have the option to work with my hands outside of an office, although I am also interested in the organization and structure of accounting.
Q: What's your favorite subject to learn about/study?
A: My favorite subject throughout school has been math, but so far in my college classes, I am really enjoying the connection between my math, economics, sociology and business ethics classes.
Q: What's your favorite thing to do in your free time?
A: Outside of riding, I really enjoy physical fitness and being outdoors. I also enjoy singing and dancing (I participated in show choir in high school).
Q: So far, what do you like most about being part of the team?
A: I am completely in love with the family aspect of the team. We all help each other out. It really brings a new aspect of teamwork to such an individual sport.
Q: So far, what's been the most challenging part of being on the team?
A: Although, like I said, I am completely in love with the team aspect, there was a transition time in learning how to participate and find my role.
Q: Do you have any goals you want to achieve while you're on the team?
A: During my four years on the team, my main, overall goal is to improve; to improve in anything I do and to be the best at my role on the team. Whether that is in the weight room, grooming horses, braiding, riding, or anything; my goal is to improve and be the best that I can be.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your respective discipline?
A: What I enjoy most about Fences is the challenge it presents. Every time a rider walks into the ring, a challenge to fitness the course and complete a consistent round is presented. I love the challenge and the "flow".
Q: What is your favorite place on campus?
A: Starbucks and SADC [student athlete development center].
Q: What is your favorite Auburn tradition? Why?
A: The Auburn Creed, it's inspirational and every word has a meaning.
Q: Have you felt like a part of the Auburn Family since coming here?
A: Eighteen years and counting, born and raised.
Q: Did you play any different sports in high school?
A: I played volleyball and participated in show choir.
