AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn women's basketball team hit the floor for the first official team practice of the 2017-18 season Wednesday afternoon, beginning preparations for head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy's sixth season.

The Tigers worked out for three-and-a-half hours on the Auburn Arena main floor, focusing primarily on half-court defense throughout the practice.

"It went well," Williams-Flournoy said of the initial practice. "Of course on the first day, you see a lot that you have to work on. But one thing we're always going to do is play hard and practice hard.

"We're building a team of excellence. That's what our motto is. Every day, we're building someone to step up and be a leader."

Practice began with Auburn University president Dr. Steven Leath greeting each player and staff member and sitting in on a "chalk talk" as Williams-Flournoy broke down the Tigers' 1-2-2 zone defense.

The workout ended on a high note when, during a five-on-five drill, senior guard Tiffany Lewis heaved a desperation shot from about 25 feet to beat the shot clock, which rattled home and gave her team the win in the drill.

Wednesday's practice was the first of 30 allowable practices over the next 40 days, leading up to Auburn's season-opener at Virginia Tech on Monday, Nov. 13. The Tigers' home opener is Thursday, Nov. 16, against North Carolina A&T.

Auburn is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and returns three starters from the 2016-17 team. Head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy begins her sixth season at Auburn and her 14th overall as a head coach.
