AUBURN, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference coaches have selected Mustapha Heron as a Preseason All-SEC selection. Heron was one of 10 to land on the second team.
Entering his second season, Heron put together a stellar freshman campaign a year ago. The sophomore earned a spot on the Freshman All-SEC team, becoming the first Tiger to do so since DeWayne Reed in 2007.
Heron was also one of 20 in the country tabbed to the Jerry West Award watch list, given annually to the nation's top shooting guard.
The Waterbury, Conn. native broke the Auburn freshman record by scoring in double figures in his first 25 games of the season, smashing the previous best held by Wesley Person (14) in 1990-91.
Heron averaged 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a freshman, ranking ninth in scoring and 14th in rebounds among SEC players.
He paced the Tigers with seven 20-point games and three double-doubles. Heron led the team in rebounds in 15 games and scoring in 10 contests during the 2016-17 campaign.
The southpaw also broke the Auburn freshman record for starts in a season as he earned the nod in all 32 games a season ago.
Heron and the Tigers lift the lid on the 2017-18 season with a 7 p.m. CT showdown against Norfolk State Friday night at Auburn Arena.
