It was a weekend to remember for Auburn's Hugo Gonzalez. The freshman from Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Spain, won three events, set three school records and collected three NCAA Automatic qualifying times for Auburn's swimming team at the Georgia Invitational over the weekend. Then on Tuesday he was named the SEC's Co-Male Swimmer of the Week.
Gonzalez won the 200 IM on Friday night in 1:42.02, besting the field by over a second and Joe Patching's almost two-year-old program record by .19 seconds. His time, an NCAA A cut, is currently third-fastest in the country. His prelims time of 1:43.67 is also the 14th-fastest performance in school history.
The following day he won the 400 IM in 3:39.28 to win by three-quarters of a second and obliterate Joe Patching's school record of 3:41.79 from last season. His time, an NCAA A cut, is the fastest in the nation. His prelims time of 3:44.29 is also the 17th-fastest performance in school history.
Gonzalez closed out his individual racings with a win in the 200 back on Sunday in 1:39.05, breaking Pascal Wollach's school record of 1:39.65 that stood since the 2009 NCAA Championships. His time, a NCAA A cut, is currently second-fastest in the country.
Gonzalez also posted a 46.24 leadoff backstroke split on the 400 Medley Relay on Friday, which makes him the ninth-fastest 100 back performer in school history. That time is currently 19th-fastest in the country.
Gonzalez closed out his meet by anchoring the 400 Free Relay in 43.10, the second-fastest anchor on the day, helping the team to a NCAA A cut in the event.
This is the third time Gonzalez has been honored by the conference this season.
