NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore sprinter Natalliah Whyte shined in her indoor collegiate debut, clocking a 23.98 to win the women's 200m on day one of the Commodore Invitational. Her time is currently tied for the third-fastest in the nation this season.
"Pretty solid first day," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "I'm pleased with our result today and I thought we did pretty good."
The Tigers swept the long jump competition with Mark Rubalcaba winning the men's event with a distance of 23-10.25/7.27m and Jakayla Hand winning the women's with a personal best mark of 19-1.50/5.83m.
Jaron Brooks was Auburn's fourth event-winner of the day in the men's high jump, clearing the bar at 6-6.75/2.00m.
In her Auburn debut, Erin Perkins finished runner-up in the women's weight toss with a distance of 56-9.25/17.30m. Skyler Daniel and Caroline Lawrence finished second and fourth, respectively, in the women's high jump.
Chris Stone cleared 15-9/4.80m in the men's pole vault to finish second.
In the men's 200m race, newcomer Chiason Tenkiang clocked a 22.00 to finish fourth.
"We didn't have a lot of things going on tonight, but the competition we did do, I thought we did very well and I'm very pleased right now," Spry said. "Now we just have to come back tomorrow, keep pushing and see we where we are, and if we continue to do tomorrow what we did today, I think we'll have a very solid first competition."
