BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Guard Mustapha Heron has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. He is the second Auburn player to earn recognition this season, joining Chuma Okeke.
Heron becomes the first Tiger to garner player of the week honors from the conference since KT Harrell in 2014.
The sophomore averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game during a 2-0 week that featured wins at No. 23 Tennessee and against No. 22 Arkansas. It is the first time since 1958 that Auburn has defeated ranked SEC opponents in consecutive games.
Heron and the Tigers finished the week on a 12-game winning streak, the longest streak by an Auburn team since the 1999-2000 campaign and the second-longest active streak in the country (West Virginia, 14).
The Waterbury, Conn. native had 15 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist at Tennessee. He then followed that up with 17 points and six rebounds against Arkansas.
For the season, Heron leads the team with 15.9 points per game and is also the fourth-leading rebounder at 5.6 boards per contest.
Heron and the Tigers return to the court Tuesday when they host Ole Miss. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CT on the Auburn Sports Network and ESPNU.
