AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn men's tennis team posted a 5-1 win Saturday over Boise State competing in the 70th annual Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic played at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. The Tigers also faced Fresno State and Princeton over the weekend.
Saturday, Auburn won the doubles point and then used outstanding singles play to notch a 5-1 victory over Boise State. The teams of Olle Thestrup and Tad Maclean on court two and Carles Sarrio and Diego Chavarria on court three posted the doubles wins. In singles, Auburn picked up wins by Sarrio, Maclean, Brandon Laubser and Lorenzo Rodriguez to clinch the win.
In Saturday's nightcap against Princeton, Auburn got a win in doubles from Sarrio and Chavarria, but Princeton took the doubles point. Sarrio put Auburn on the scoreboard with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Damian Rodriguez on court three, and Thestrup and Rodriguez forced their matches into a third set, but Princeton clinched the team win with a tiebreak victory on court four.
In Friday's opening match, the Tigers captured the doubles point with wins by Edward Nguyen and DeVincentis on court one and by Thestrup and Maclean on court two. DeVincentis posted a three-set win over Jeremy Moser (7-5, 0-6, 6-3) on court three and Laubser added another point with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Catagay Soke (7-5, 7-5) but Fresno State took the other four singles matches to win the team match 4-3.
The Tigers are now 9-5 on the spring season. Fresno State is 9-6, Boise State is 1-8 and Princeton is 8-5. Arizona State was the men's tournament winner. Auburn begins SEC action next Sunday, March 4, at Mississippi State.
