AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" Three Tigers scored in double figures and Auburn (12-11, 3-8 SEC) shot its highest percentage from the field in an SEC game this season in a 70-62 victory over LSU Thursday night at Auburn Arena.
After missing five of its first eight shots, Auburn used a 7-0 run over 1:23 to take a 13-8 lead midway through the first quarter, and the Tigers led for the final 34 minutes of the game.
Coach Flo records 100th win at Auburn
The win was the 100th victory at Auburn for head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, who is 100-87 in her six seasons on The Plains. Williams-Flournoy joins Joe Ciampi, who had a 568-203 record in 25 years as the Tigers' head coach, and Nell Fortner, who led Auburn to a 145-106 mark in eight years, as the only Tiger head coaches to register 100 wins. Williams-Flournoy is 243-191 in 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach at Georgetown and Auburn.
"I did not even know (it was my 100th)," Williams-Flournoy said after the game. "I was just very happy about the win, but I'll take 100. I'll take another win. I'll take 101 wins, also."
Highest RPI win of season
Auburn's victory over LSU, who entered the game ranked 25th in the RPI, is the Tigers' highest-ranked win of the season. The Bayou Bengals entered the game winners of three straight and five of their last six, including wins over No. 10 Tennessee and No. 17 Georgia in their last three games.
"It's great," Williams-Flournoy said of the victory. "We've been at that point where we've been right there. We've kept coming back without the win and kept coming back without the win. This is something that they've really needed. We can keep saying that we've played hard and that we were almost there, but at the end of the day, you want the win. I'm proud of them for finishing this one out with the win because LSU is tough. They're a very good team, and the conference is just tough."
Thompson continues her dominance over the Pelican State
Freshman Unique Thompson continued her dominance over the state of Louisiana as she scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting for her third 20-point game of the season - two of which have come against Louisiana schools. She also had nine rebounds in the victory. In the teams' first meeting, Thompson scored 11 points and collected seven rebounds in Baton Rouge on Jan. 18.
Some of Thompson's best games this season have come against schools from Louisiana. She scored 16 points and grabbed 14 boards for her first career double-double in Auburn's victory vs. Louisiana Tech on Nov. 19; she actually had a double-double by halftime. It was the first of six double-doubles this season for Thompson, with four of those coming against Louisiana schools. The Theodore, Ala., native's other three double-doubles against the Pelican State came against Louisiana-Lafayette (career-high 29 points, 12 rebounds), Southern (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Southeastern Louisiana (10 points, 11 rebounds).
Auburn continues a three-game home stand Monday night when the Tigers welcome Vanderbilt to Auburn Arena. Game time is 6 p.m. with the broadcast on SEC Network and WTGZ 93.9 FM.
