AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" No. 19 Tennessee was too strong Friday evening, defeating Auburn 6-1 in men's tennis at the Barksdale Tennis Stadium in Knoxville.
In doubles, Carles Sarrio and Matteo De Vincentis took court two to a tiebreaker, and Edward Nguyen and Tad Maclean were tied 5-5 on court one against the Volunteers' No. 15-ranked tandem of Preston Touliatos and Luis Valero, but Tennessee eventually won the doubles point.
The Volunteers swept through singles as well, winning five of six first sets and capturing wins on courts four, six and five to clinch the team victory. Auburn freshman Matteo De Vincentis, ranked No. 109 nationally, won his first set 7-6 over Luis Valero, and then captured another tiebreaker 7-1 to take the second set 7-6 and give Auburn its only point of the evening.
The Tigers are now 10-13 overall and 0-7 in SEC play. Tennessee is now 17-5 and 6-2 in the SEC. Sunday, Auburn goes to No. 20 Georgia (9-8, 2-6 SEC) for a noon CT match at the Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.
