Philadelphia - Auburn junior Kylee Carter broke her own school record in the javelin en route to winning the women's college javelin championship at the historic Penn Relays Thursday. The women's 4x100m relay team posted the top qualifying time to advance to Friday's finals.
A Beauregard, Ala., native, Cater won the javelin throw with mark of 54.78m/179-8, crushing her previous mark of 175-1 set in the 2017 outdoor opener. Carter now is the No. 6 performer nationally and No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference. Teammate Peyton Montgomery had a strong performance finishing sixth with a personal-best throw of 49.43m/162-2.
The quartet of freshman Renae Shaw, seniors Jonielle Smith and Dominique Bullock and sophomore Natalliah Whyte won their heat and had the fastest qualifying time in the women's 4x100 with a time of 44.02. They will look to win gold in the event Penn Relays since 1993.
Bullock had a busy day as she not only was part of the 4x100 relay, but also competed in the women's college long jump championship finishing seventh with a leap of 5.97m/19-7.
Sophomore Erin Perkins, competing in her first Penn Relays, captured a silver medal in the women's college hammer throw with a throw of 59.14m/194-0.
Freshman thrower Tori McKinley had a long throw of 15.57m/51-0.75 to finish eighth in the women's shot put.
In the college women's long jump, Jakayla Hand (5.81m/19-0.75) was 11th, while Deja Hillman (5.39m/17-8.25) was 44th.
Day 2 at the Penn Relays for the Tigers will start at 10 am with Jakayla Hand and Deja Hillman in the women's triple jump.
