NCAA Championships Second Round Results
STILLWATER, Okla. - Freshman Brandon Mancheno carded a 6-under 66 to pace No. 7 Auburn in the second round of the NCAA Championships Saturday afternoon.
Mancheno's round was lowest of the day by any golfer at Karsten Creek Golf Club and matched Kevin Haefner's program record of 66 in the 2000 NCAA Championships.
The Jacksonville, Fla. native leads the field by one stroke after two rounds.
Meanwhile, despite starting the round in 29th, the Tigers shot an 8-under 280 to climb an unprecedented 20 spots to move themselves into a tie for ninth overall.
"We just didn't play well in the first round," head coach Nick Clinard said. "We played timid and we hit a lot of bad shots, too. But, today we played more like how Auburn plays and we were able to hit some better shots, make some putts and play with a little more swagger out there."
Mancheno, the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year, tied for the team lead with seven birdies in his second circuit of the course.
Sophomore Jovan Rebula also carded a round in the 60s with a 3-under 69 behind five birdies, including three on the front nine. The George, South Africa native is tied for 19th after two rounds.
Freshman Wells Padgett tallied an even-par second round. Junior Trace Crowe turned in a 1-over 73, while senior Ben Schlottman carded a 3-over 75.
Auburn was one of only six teams to turn in under-par scores Saturday.
Through two rounds, No. 13 Texas Tech leads the field at -5, followed by No. 1 Oklahoma State (-4), No. 8 Alabama (-3), Duke (+2) and No. 2 Oklahoma (+2). The Tigers (+4) are just two shots out of the top five.
With Auburn's rapid ascension into the top 10, the Tigers are in prime position as the field gets trimmed to 15 following Sunday's third round.
Auburn is paired with No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 17 Texas off the 10th tee, beginning at 8:17 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
