AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn outfielder Jay Estes has agreed to sign a free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
A native of Crawfordville, Florida, Estes transferred to Auburn following a pair of seasons at Chipola College and turned in a .303 career batting average in two seasons on The Plains. He earned a start in 123 of 125 games played at five different positions.
Estes saved his best for last as he recorded 18 multiple-hit efforts in the last 29 games and raised his batting average 70 points over the last two months of the 2018 season, resulting in a team-best .329 batting average. He logged career highs in nearly every offensive category including runs (52), hits (78), RBI (33), on-base percentage (.401) and slugging percentage (.409) while also stealing 13 of 16 bases. Estes also lead the team with 19 doubles for the second straight season, which registered sixth in the Southeastern Conference.
An infielder by trade, Estes transitioned to the outfield prior to the 2018 season and led everyday position players with a .993 fielding percentage and six outfield assists.
