ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Auburn rising sophomore Brandon Mancheno earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur after placing second at the qualifying event at the World Golf Village on the King & Bear Course Thursday.
Mancheno joins teammate Jovan Rebula in the field at Pebble Beach, Calif., Aug. 13-19. Rebula earned an exemption after capturing the 123rd British Amateur title in June.
Mancheno produced back-to-back rounds below par to secure a trip to the annual nationwide amateur event. The Jacksonville, Fla. native finished 8-under in the two-round qualifier with rounds of 67 and 69.
He earned a second-place finish out of a field of 84 and was one of just eight to card two below-par rounds in the 36-hole event.
The 118th U.S. Amateur Championship boasts a field of 312 participants that features two rounds of stroke play, which produces a cut of the top 64 scores. The remaining golfers then take part in match play to decide the winner.
