SWIMMERS POST FAST TIMES AT AUBURN'S ORANGE AND BLUE CLASSIC -- Feb. 9, 2002
AUBURN, Ala. -- In the team's final meet before the Southeastern Conference championships Feb. 18-23, the Auburn men's and women's swim teams posted season-high times here Saturday at the Orange and Blue Classic.
''The purpose of this meet is different than most meets during the season,'' head coach David Marsh said. ''This is for more of a personal preparation for the upcoming championships and I think that these swims really set us up well for the SEC Championships.''
On the women's side, sophomore Heather Kemp improved her season-best time in the 50 freestyle to 23.85 and freshman Kirsty Coventry swam to a 1:49.49 in the 200 free, which is nearly two seconds faster than her previous best.
Sophomore Jeremy Knowles for the Tiger men had three impressive swims including earning his season-best times in the 1000 free (9:22.62), 200 fly (1:50.15) and the 400 individual medley (3:59.09). Freshman Ryan Wochomurka also had a fast day in the pool with a 20.39 in the 50 free.
''Jeremy Knowles had an outstanding day and Ryan Wochomurka is really fine-tuning his swimming,'' Marsh said. ''For the women, Magda Dyszkiewicz is really starting to turn things around after a rough start to the season and I think that Kellie West had some outstanding swims today.''
The Tigers will begin SEC Championship competition Feb. 20-23 while the divers will compete Feb. 18-20 in Fayetteville, Ark.
