FORT WORTH, Texas – The Auburn women's tennis team wrapped up their first tournament of the fall season Sunday, earning 10 singles wins over the weekend at the Big 5 Challenge.
Junior Taylor Russo and sophomore Lindsay Song led the way with three wins apiece. Russo started with a victory over Texas Tech's Lana Rush, 6-4, 1-7, 1-0 (10-7) on Thursday, then picked up another win Friday over TCU's Chloe Hule, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2). Russo picked up a third win Sunday over Notre Dame's Bess Waldram, 7-5, 6-4.
Song, a transfer from Davidson, earned three victories in her first Auburn tournament. She fought back from a set down to earn a win over TCU's Stevie Kennedy, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8), on Friday, then defeated Julia Deming of Kansas on Saturday, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 1-0 (10-8). Song wrapped up the week with another comeback win over Arizona's Taylor Tamblin, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
Sophomore Jaeda Daniel, ranked No. 39 nationally in singles, started her season off strong with a pair of straight-sets wins over ranked opponents. On Thursday, Daniel defeated No. 37 Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-0. She then came back Friday morning and took down No. 32 Natalie Novotna of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Madeline Meredith also earned a pair of victories. She defeated Kate Paulus of TCU on Friday, 6-3, 6-4, then earned a win Sunday over Arizona's Marie Van Aelst, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).
The Tigers will be back in action at the ITA Southern Regional Championship, which runs Oct. 12-15 in Oxford, Miss., hosted by Ole Miss.
