BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Chuma Okeke has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It is Okeke's second career honor from the conference as he was named SEC Freshman of the Week Dec. 4, 2017.
The sophomore led the Tigers with 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in two victories against South Alabama and No. 25 Washington. He shot 75 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-8) and was perfect from the charity stripe (5-of-5).
In the season opener, Okeke stuffed the stat sheet with career-high marks of 20 points, five assists, three blocks and three steals in a 101-58 win vs. South Alabama. He also added a team-best nine rebounds.
The Atlanta, Ga. native secured his fourth career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in an 88-66 triumph over No. 25 Washington. It was Auburn's first regular season win over a ranked non-conference foe since beating No. 19 NC State Dec. 5, 1970. The 22-point margin was the third-largest against a ranked non-league opponent during the regular season in program history.
Okeke led the team in plus-minus with an astounding plus-79 mark across two games. He was plus-47 against South Alabama and plus-32 vs. Washington.
Auburn returns to the court Wednesday, Nov. 14 when it takes on Mississippi College. Tip time is slated for 7 p.m. CT at Auburn Arena.
