AUBURN, Ala. – After a three-game, six-day road trip that saw Auburn go 3-0 and run its winning streak to eight games, senior Janiah McKay was named the SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
McKay, a senior from Gainesville, Fla., averaged 18.3 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the Tigers' three victories last week. She scored 21 points in both Auburn games in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at the Carolinas Challenge, leading the Tigers to victories over Coastal Carolina and North Carolina. In both games, she hit critical free throws late in the game to secure the victory for the Tigers.
Against North Carolina, her pass to freshman Robyn Benton for a layup with 10 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 69-69 to force overtime, then McKay scored nine points in the extra period to clinch an 86-81 victory for Auburn. Her 21-point efforts against Coastal Carolina and North Carolina were her third and fourth straight games with at least 20 points.
It marks the second career SEC weekly honor for McKay. She was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Dec. 21, 2015, after her performance in a tournament at Towson.
Auburn is 11-1 overall and has won eight straight games, its longest winning streak under head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. The Tigers close out non-conference play on Saturday, Dec. 29, at home against Alabama State.
