Auburn men's tennis posted a pair of 4-0 victories over Samford Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center in Auburn.
"I'm happy with the guys today," Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said. "I think we still need to come out a little quicker in the first doubles. The second round of doubles against the same team, we came out and played the way we should."
Today was the first action of the spring season for veterans Tad Maclean, Brandon Laubser and Matteo DeVincentis, and Reynolds was pleased with their performance.
"They played well. It's been a long day. They got here at 8:30 in the morning and now it's 5 o'clock at night; it's more mentally draining to stay ready to play, but I thought they played well.
"That's what we need, and we will go back and work for the next week and a half. I thought Matteo came out with a lot of energy, which is what we need out of him. That's the biggest change from last year -- he's more comfortable. Guys feed off that (energy) and that's what you need in a team sport."
Auburn took the doubles point in the morning match on wins by Tad Maclean and Brandon Laubser on court one (6-1) and a clinching 6-4 win on court two by Matteo DeVincentis and Diego Chavarria.
In singles, Matteo DeVincentis picked up his first singles win of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rossouw Norval on court one. Michael Durham added a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Max Rebol on court five, and Auburn clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Brandon Laubser over Daniel Orlita on court two.
In the afternoon match, Maclean and Laubser and DeVincentis and Chavarria both were 6-2 winners in doubles to earn the doubles point for the Tigers.
Singles victories by Maclean (court three), Tim Dollman (court four) and DeVincentis (court one) clinched the second match for Auburn by another 4-0 score.
Auburn is now 4-0 for the season. The next action for the Tigers comes Wednesday, January 23, at home with a doubleheader against Alabama A&M. Those matches will be at noon and 3:30 p.m. All Auburn tennis action is at the Yarbrough Tennis Center (771 Yarbrough Farms Blvd., Auburn) and admission is free.
