AUBURN, Ala. – Northwestern outlasted the Auburn men's tennis team by a score of 4-2 in a neutral-site match lasting three and a half hours and featuring six tiebreakers Sunday morning at the Baumgardner Tennis Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Northwestern took the doubles point, and in singles, the first set went to tiebreaker in five of the six matches. Auburn sophomore Matteo DeVincentis, playing on court one, won that first set and carried that momentum to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Dominik Stary to give the Tigers their first team point of the morning.
On court four, sophomore Tad Maclean fought back in three sets to tie the match 2-2 with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Antonioni Fasano, the first of four singles matches to extend to three sets, but the Wildcats captured the third set in two of those to clinch the team win.
Auburn, now 7-2, returns home for action this upcoming weekend at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Friday, the Tigers will host Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. and Alabama State at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Auburn entertains Minnesota in a noon match.
