Auburn, Ala.—Auburn freshman sprinter Anthony Schwartz was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Schwartz earned the honors after his record-breaking performance this past weekend in the 60m.
Schwartz set the school freshman record at 60m in consecutive races, clocking a 6.62 in the preliminaries and a 6.59 in the finals at the Tiger Paw Invitational, in Clemson, S.C. He broke the previous mark of 6.65 held by himself and Marcus Rowland (2009).
His 6.59 makes him the No. 5 performer in school history and it's the No. 9 fastest 60m by an Auburn athlete in the last 21 years. A native of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Schwarz's time is tied for No. 8 nationally, No. 2 in the SEC and tied for No. 1 nationally among freshmen.
Also a member of the Auburn football team as a wide receiver, Schwartz was a standout high school sprinter, earning Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors as a senior in 2018. A world youth record holder, Schwartz earned a silver medal at 100m in the IAAF U20 World Championships in Finland this past summer.
Auburn will be back in action February 22-23 when it competes at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
