AUBURN, Ala. – Brooke Sansom earned SEC Women's Golfer of the Week honors Wednesday after the freshman won the individual title in Sunday's Shootout at Shoal Creek and helped No. 11 Auburn take home the team championship at the event.
Sansom shot a career-low 69 (-3) with four birdies and one bogey at the Shoal Creek Golf Club, home of the 2018 U.S. Women's Open, and finished in a tie with Alabama junior Jiwon Jeon. The two proceeded to a sudden death playoff where Sansom made another birdie to win the first hole and win the tournament.
"It's an honor that they chose me," Sansom said. "Out of all the golfers in the SEC, they chose me to be Golfer of the Week. It's something you dream would happen. You don't really expect it to happen when it does happen, so it's still kind of surreal.
"I wouldn't have gotten this honor if it hadn't been for my team pushing me to get better every single day and for the coaches, too."
As a team, Auburn finished with a round of 285 (-3) on Sunday to claim the Shootout at Shoal Creek title. Sansom was one of four Tigers to shoot even par or better for the round.
With the individual victory, Sansom became the third individual winner for Auburn in the 2018-19 season. Fellow freshman Anika Bolcíková won the Magnolia Invitational title in October thanks to a career-low round of 66 (-6) on the second day. And sophomore Kaleigh Telfer shared the individual title in the Battle at the Beach after finishing at 5 under through three rounds and leading the Tigers to a team title.
Sansom is the first Auburn golfer to win SEC Golfer of the Week since Cydney Clanton in November 2009.
The Tigers will split up and take part in two tournaments this weekend with the Lake Oconee Collegiate Championship in Georgia and the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans. Sansom is expected to play with the group that will be headed to New Orleans.
