AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn women's team improved to 10-0 at home on the season with a pair of wins over Samford and Georgia State Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Auburn (11-1) downed Samford 4-0 and defeated Georgia State 5-0 to wrap up a six-match home stand that concluded the non-conference portion of the home season.
"I continue to be impressed with this team," Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. "Week by week we continue to get better. To me, that's a very good sign of the improvements we are making in practice and it's translating onto the court. I told the girls that I wanted them to be playing their best tennis in March and April. So, the fact that we continue to get better in February is really good.
"I was very impressed with our doubles. This was our best doubles day so far this season. I was also very impressed with the No. 3 team for doubles. When you can have a No. 3 team like we do, they can get out early and set the tone."
In the first match against Samford, the Tigers got off to a quick start in doubles as Yu Chen and Lindsay Song took court three, 6-0, while Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court one.
Sophia Graver got the Tigers on the board in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win for Yu Chen at the No. 4 spot. Daniel clinched the victory over Samford on court one with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory.
Doubles play continued to be strong against Georgia State as Chen and Alannah Griffin got another win at the No. 3 spot with a 6-0 sweep to set the tone. Daniel and Meredith clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot, and Taylor Russo and Graver made it a clean sweep of doubles with a 6-3 win on court one.
Caroline Turner got a singles win for the Tigers at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-1, to give Auburn a 2-0 lead. Meredith finished shortly thereafter with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court two, and Chen clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot. Graver added a fifth point with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court three.
"I knew going in that this was going to be one of the toughest doubleheaders that we have played," Spencer said. "I was very, very impressed with how the girls stepped up and just weathered the storm at times. They played aggressive and with a lot of confidence. I think this gives us a lot of confidence going into Blue-Grey."
The Tigers will be back in action next weekend at the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic, which runs Friday-Saturday in Montgomery.
