AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn women's tennis team earned a pair of wins Saturday, defeating Houston 4-1 and UAB 4-3 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Tigers (7-1) won the doubles point in both matches and earned straight-sets wins in singles to improve to 6-0 at home this season.
In the morning's first match, Auburn got back on track in doubles with a pair of 6-1 wins. The 14th-ranked team of Sophia Graver and Taylor Russo finished first, just a couple of minutes before Alannah Griffin and Yu Chen finished off their win on court three.
Jaeda Daniel got the Tigers going in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court one. Russo put the Tigers ahead 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court four, and Graver clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Madeline Meredith was in the third set and Griffin had fought back to take a 5-3 lead in the second set when play was halted.
In the nightcap against UAB, the Tigers again clinched the doubles point as Daniel and Meredith took a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot, followed shortly thereafter by a 6-4 win by Graver and Russo on the top doubles line.
Meredith cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles to give Auburn a 2-0 lead, and Daniel made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the top singles spot. After a UAB win on court four, Yu Chen fought for a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot to clinch the win.
The Tigers will return to action next Saturday with a home doubleheader against Jackson State. Match times are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CT.
