HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Playing against an elite field, the No. 11 Auburn women's golf team opened the Darius Intercollegiate with a 294 (+10) in Friday's first round and is currently sitting at No. 8 on the team leaderboard.
Sophomores Julie McCarthy and Mychael O'Berry led the way for the Tigers with a pair of opening round 72s (+1). O'Berry finished with a team-high four birdies on the day while McCarthy, the No. 11 player in the country coming in, knocked in one birdie and made par on 15 of the 18 holes. The duo is currently tied for 20th overall.
Freshman Brooke Sansom also made a birdie Friday and posted a 3-over 74. Sansom, who won the Shootout at Shoal Creek last month, is in a tie for 39th on the player leaderboard.
The other two Auburn golfers in the field, junior Elena Hualde Zúñiga and sophomore Kaleigh Telfer, are tied for 52nd overall after each carded a 76 (+5) in the first round.
South Carolina leads the field at 2-under par (282), followed by Florida State (284), Wake Forest (285), Duke (289), LSU (290), Furman (291), Virginia (291), Auburn (294), UCLA (295), Georgia (297), Arkansas (298), Vanderbilt (298), Baylor (299), Northwestern (300), Oklahoma State (301), North Carolina (305) and Alabama (309).
Auburn, who is paired with Virginia and UCLA for the second round, will be one of the first groups to tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
