BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior pitcher Blake Schilleci has been named to the 2019 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its 21 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Along with posting career-high numbers in appearances, innings pitched and strikeouts on the mound this season, Schilleci has also participated in a number of community service projects this year.
The Birmingham, Alabama, native volunteered for Samaritan's Purse, a Christian humanitarian aid organization, following the tornados that came through East Alabama in early March. Schilleci assisted in the tornado relief efforts by removing debris from private properties in Smiths Station, Alabama.
Schilleci also participated in World Read Aloud Day at Yarbrough Elementary School in February. Additionally, he visited with and distributed gifts to patients at Children's of Alabama in April and teamed up with the Miracle League of East Alabama earlier this month, helping put on a morning clinch for the miracle leaguers.
Schilleci not only excels in the community, but also in the classroom. A software engineering major with a 3.71 cumulative GPA, he will intern at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, for a contractor of NASA this summer.
Schilleci and the Tigers (31-21, 13-14 SEC) wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at No. 20 LSU (32-21, 15-12 SEC) from Thursday-Saturday in Baton Rouge.
