AUBURN, Ala. – From winning her first collegiate tournament to a semifinal run at the NCAA Championship last month, it has been quite a season for Auburn sophomore Julie McCarthy. That season will continue this weekend with the Arnold Palmer Cup.
The prestigious event – beginning Friday from The Alotian Club in Little Rock, Arkansas – is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's collegiate golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. McCarthy, a native of Ireland, will tee for the International Team.
"I'm really excited," McCarthy said. "It was always the goal. Coach (Melissa) Luellen and Coach (Andrew) Pratt have said to us that it would be a great tournament to make within your four years of playing for Auburn. To be able to get the opportunity to do it this year at The Alotian Club is amazing. We've already played the course with our team earlier before nationals, so I'm excited to go back."
McCarthy earned her spot on the team thanks to a breakout sophomore season that included six top-five finishes and her first individual title at the Clemson Invitational. Her stroke average per round (72.90) is the sixth-lowest in single-season program history.
Since its inception, over 100 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA Tour, European Tour or LPGA. Twenty-eight have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, and more than 50 have claimed over 200 victories on the PGA or European Tours.
On the men's side, Auburn will also be represented as associate head coach Corey Maggard will serve as the assistant coach for the U.S. Team.
There will be a live stream of the event on GolfChannel.com where you can follow along and watch all three days of competition. The stream will also include opening and closing ceremonies, as well as profiles of the competitors.
