FLORENCE, Italy – Auburn women's basketball's tour of Italy continued over the weekend as the Tigers trekked from Rome to Florence Saturday before playing their second game of the trip on Sunday.
The Tigers spent a sweltering Saturday morning touring Rome, visiting the Trevi fountain, the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona, enjoying lunch along the Campo dei Fiori. The team then boarded a Trenitalia train for the trek to Florence, arriving late afternoon. Following a team dinner, the Tigers took a brief tour of Florence, walking along the Arno River back to the hotel for the night.
Sunday morning saw the team take a walking tour of Florence, visiting the massive Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore on the Piazza del Duomo, then heading toward the Piazza della Signoria, where a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Allies' liberation of Florence on Aug. 11, 1944, was being held.
The Tigers dropped their contest Sunday night against a European all-star team that featured multiple players that have played or currently play professionally in Europe. Freshman Lauren Hansen led Auburn with 11 points, and junior Unique Thompson had 11 rebounds.
Auburn's Italy tour continues Monday with a visit to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Tuesday will see the Tigers visit a parmesan cheese factory in Parma, then continue onto Milan for the final three days of the trip. Auburn's final game of the tour takes place Thursday in Milan against another European all-star team.
