HANAHAN, S.C. – The Auburn women's golf team saved its best round for the final round at this week's Cougar Classic. The Tigers shot a 286 (-2) on Tuesday to move up one spot on the final leaderboard where they finished in 10th place.
"The last day seems to be our best day, but we have to start much stronger to compete with the elite teams," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "The course was in perfect condition after Hurricane Dorian moved through. Perfect conditions led to low scoring. We just made too many unforced errors that we will clean up."
Mychael O'Berry shot the low round of the day for Auburn with a 70 (-2) that included four birdies. The junior, who earned the No. 1 spot in the lineup for the team's first tournament, moved up into a tie for 47th on the final individual leaderboard.
Freshman Megan Schofill also shot under par Tuesday with a 1-under 71. Through three rounds, she was fourth among all participants with 41 pars made, and she finished in a tie for 37th overall in what was her Auburn debut.
The top finisher for the Tigers was junior Kaleigh Telfer, who shot par or better in all three rounds this week. Telfer fired a 72 (E) in the third round and wrapped up play tied for 16th on the player leaderboard at 2 under. With four more birdies Tuesday, she made a total of 12 birdies for the tournament.
Sophomore Brooke Sansom tied for 54th overall at 6-over par, and senior Elena Hualde Zúñiga finished two strokes back (+8) where she placed in a tie for 64th.
Vanderbilt hung on to win the tournament at 27-under par (837), followed by Wake Forest (838), Florida (840), Arkansas (855), Furman (862), UCF (862), College of Charleston (866), Florida State (866), North Carolina (867), Auburn (870), Campbell (875), Tennessee (876), Maryland (879), North Carolina State (884), Penn State (898), Boston College (914) and Georgetown (922).
Auburn will return to the course in 10 days for the Mason Rudolph Championship.
