HANAHAN, S.C. – The first and second rounds of the Cougar Classic took place Monday, and through 36 holes at Yeamans Hall Club (Par 72, 6,301 yards), the No. 13 Auburn women's golf team is currently tied for 11th after shooting 584 (+8) as a team.
The Tigers were at even par through the first 18 holes thanks to junior Kaleigh Telfer and sophomore Brooke Sansom, who both shot under par in their 2019-20 debut. Telfer fired a 70 (-2) with five birdies while Sansom, after making bogey on two of the first three holes, responded with five birdies to match her career-low round at 69 (-3).
Telfer continued her solid play in the second round, shooting a 72 (E) with three more birdies. The junior, who was named to the ANNIKA Award Preseason Watch List, is in a tie for 11th on the player leaderboard at 2 under heading into Tuesday's third round.
Sansom dropped five strokes in the second round but is still second on the team and tied for 37th overall at 2 over for the tournament.
Freshman Megan Schofill made her Auburn debut Monday and after 36 holes, she is currently in a tie for 49th at 4 over. Schofill fired a 73 (+1) with two birdies in the first round and then added another birdie in the second round where she finished with a 3-over 75.
Senior Elena Hualde Zúñiga and junior Mychael O'Berry are both sitting at 7 over through two rounds and tied for 70th on the player leaderboard.
Vanderbilt and Wake Forest share the lead at 16-under par (560), followed by Florida (562), Florida State (574), Arkansas (575), North Carolina (575), Furman (576), College of Charleston (581), Campbell (583), UCF (583), Auburn (584), Tennessee (584), Maryland (586), North Carolina State (590), Penn State (598), Georgetown (612) and Boston College (613).
Auburn will be paired with Tennessee and UCF for Tuesday's third and final round. It will be a shotgun start as all 17 teams will tee off at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
