MARTIN, Tenn. – The No. 1 Auburn equestrian team concluded the first week of the season with a 12-8 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma State Friday afternoon in Martin, Tenn., at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Center.
"Oklahoma State rode very well today and we've seen what we need to work on," head coach Greg Williams said. "I'm proud of our team for rebounding from mistakes and getting right back into solid rides. We appreciate UT Martin for hosting us on neutral ground and for running great meets this week."
The Tigers (2-0) kicked off the day with a 7-3 lead at intermission behind big performances from Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship.
The Fences crew went 4-1 vs. the Cowgirls, starting with a 78-69 victory from sophomore Emma Kurtz. Junior Ericka Koscinski followed with 81 points in her win before sophomore McKayla Langmeier bested Sydney North, 82-80. Junior Taylor St. Jacques edged Hannah Janson, 80-79, in the final match of the event.
Freshman Olivia Tordoff picked up where she left off yesterday, scoring a 76.5 in her win over Caroline Nielson. Classmate Maddie Spak earned the first win of her career with a 76.5-75 victory over Harley Huff and junior Deanna Green scored 76 points to earn the point for the Tigers.
Following intermission, the Reining corps finished 3-2 on the day. Freshman Jen Kasper finished her week undefeated with 67.5 points in her win. Juniors Deanna Green and Terri-June Granger closed out the event with victories, scoring a 72.5 and 70, respectively. Green secured MOP honors for her winning ride.
St. Jacques and Langmeier each picked up points for the Tigers in Equitation on the Flat. Langmeier opened with 88 points in her win, while St. Jacques earned MOP honors with her 87-81 victory over Janson.
The Tigers will take a month off before returning to competition, opening up their home schedule at the Auburn University Equestrian Center. Auburn will host three teams, starting with three Hunter Seat contests between SUNY New Paltz, Sweet Briar and TCU, Oct. 18. The Tigers and the Horned Frogs will do a full meet the following day, Oct. 19.
