AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn capped off its fall exhibition slate with a 7-1 win against Auburn Montgomery Friday night at Plainsman Park.
A total of nine Auburn pitchers allowed just one unearned run on two hits. The Tigers struck out 18 Warhawks to go along with four walks.
"I want our guys competing every time we take the field," head coach Butch Thompson said. "I thought our arms did a great job tonight. We threw a guy each inning. All-in-all everybody who threw tonight was pretty positive."
Coming off a strong postseason at the end of last year, Bailey Horn got the start for the Tigers and struck out all four batters he faced to begin the game.
"Just having trust in my arm and my coaches, getting back from last year and that stride that I found at the end of the year," Horn said. "I just tried to come out tonight feeling confident in what I can do."
Cody Greenhill, Nate LaRue and Ryan Watson combined to keep Auburn Montgomery scoreless through the fourth inning, with LaRue striking out the side in the third.
The Warhawks got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the fifth, but Peyton Glavine came out to strike out the side in the sixth before Garrett Wade, Carson Skipper and Blake Burkhalter each tossed a scoreless frame to close it out.
Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Steven Williams broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the frame before Travis Odom capped off the scoring in the contest with a two-RBI single in the eighth.
Eight Tigers recorded a hit in the contest with Garrett Farquhar leading the way with his second multi-hit effort in as many fall exhibitions. Ryan Bliss turned in a hit and scored a pair of runs out of the leadoff spot.
"Fall is where you work, and we've been getting a lot of good work in," Bliss said. "We're just going to keep trucking along and learn how to play with each other. Hopefully we take this momentum into the spring."
Auburn returns to work Sunday and will have three more weeks of team practice this fall. The Tigers cap off the fall season with the annual Orange and Blue World Series from Nov. 5-9.
