BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn freshman goalkeeper Maggie Van Thullenar has been named to the Southeastern Conference Women's Soccer Community Service Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all league sponsored sports and looks to highlight a student-athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Van Thullenar has been heavily involved in community service since stepping foot on the Auburn campus earlier this year. As a rehab and disability major, she currently serves as an associate member of the Best Buddies of Auburn program. In her role, she helps organize events for and socializes with young people with special needs.
Similar to her work with Best Buddies, Van Thullenar also recently participated in Auburn's Shine Prom and helped provide a memorable night for special needs adolescents.
Most notably and even predating her enrollment at Auburn, the freshman goalkeeper has personally sponsored a child in Haiti for the last two years. In August of 2018, Van Thullenar was able to meet her sponsor, Chednaica, and her family on a mission trip to Haiti during which she helped build a school, fed the homeless and handed out essential supplies in the village town. Van Thullenar receives pictures and updates from Cednaica and her family on a regular basis.
Auburn wraps up the regular season by hosting No. 7 South Carolina (12-1-3, 6-0-3 SEC) Thursday at 7 p.m. CT at the Auburn Soccer Complex. Treva Aycock, Bri Folds, Gerow and Hart will be honored during Senior Night ceremonies prior to the contest.
