LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Auburn women's tennis wrapped up the weekend at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic with a doubles win Sunday morning.
The team of senior Georgie Axon and junior Madeline Meredith earned a victory over Virginia Tech's team of Shene Disbergen and Natalie Novotna, 6-3, to finish off their week at the Lakewood Ranch Tennis Center.
Axon and Meredith both dropped tight singles matches on Sunday. Axon fell to Disbergen, 7-5, 7-5, and Meredith came up just short against Novotna, 7-6 (7), 7-5.
"Obviously today wasn't the way Georgie and Maddie wanted to end their fall seasons," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "Our responses to misses need to change, and as a coaching staff we need to find a way to make sure that message is heard loud and clear. Every point has value, but at the same time, matches aren't won and lost on one ball. When we choose to be emotionally driven rather than solution-focused, our tennis will never be what we want it to be. Hopefully both Maddie and Georgie can use today as motivation to work hard in the offseason to prepare for the spring."
The fall season will conclude next week with the squad split between two events. Senior Taylor Russo and freshman Selin Ovunc will compete at the ITA Fall National Championships, which begin Wednesday in Newport Beach, Calif. Other players will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the FSU All-Conference Showdown, which runs Friday-Sunday.
