Competing on opposite ends of the country, members of the Auburn women's tennis team earned a combined four wins Friday.
In Newport Beach, Calif., at the ITA Fall National Championships, freshman Selin Ovunc and senior Taylor Russo won for the second straight day in doubles in the consolation draw. They defeated Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the consolation semifinals.
"Taylor and Selin played a complete match today of traditional doubles," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "They were relentless, regardless of the outcome, and are better because of their willingness to be bold."
Ovunc's run through the consolation singles draw came to a close as she fell to Mariia Kozyreva of St. Mary's, 6-3, 7-5.
"Selin earned a lot of opportunities today but had a hard time capitalizing," Lilley said. "Her experiences here will serve her well moving forward as we develop her recipe for managing the match."
In Tallahassee, Fla., the doubles team of sophomore Yu Chen and junior Lindsay Song won a pair of doubles matches to advance to the finals in their bracket at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown.
Chen and Song defeated Despain/Louka of Clemson, 7-5, then took down Clark/Turin of USF by an identical score of 7-5. They will face Das and Salas of Florida State in the bracket final Saturday.
In singles, Chen earned a win over USF's Pellicer Perrello, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6). Song was slated to play as well, but inclement weather pushed her singles match to Saturday.
Play continues at both tournaments Saturday. Updated brackets for both events are available at CourtHive.com/Live/ITA.
