AUBURN, Ala.- The Auburn men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling 6-1 to Minnesota at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis on Friday.
Auburn's Tom Wright and Finn Murgett set the tone early in doubles, winning 6-3 on court two. Anders Fry and Diego Chavarria were victorious on court three to clinch the doubles point after a back and forth contest that went to a ten-point tiebreaker winning 7-6 (10).
The success the Tigers found in doubles, however, couldn't be replicated in singles. Minnesota answered in singles play by sweeping all six matches.
Trailing 3-1, Tyler Stice and Finn Murgett both had chances to cut into the deficit as each took his match into a third set. Stice lost a tough match on court three, 6-1. 1-6. 7-6, losing the tiebreaker point to Siim Troost. Murgett trailed early, forcing a third set but couldn't quite make the comeback falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 to Eli Ogilvy.
Auburn falls to 5-1 on the season, while Minnesota is 3-1. The Tigers return to action Sunday with a match versus Nebraska at 11 a.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
