AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn women's tennis freshman Selin Ovunc has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Ovunc, who came to Auburn from Ankara, Turkey, went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles competition last weekend with all three victories coming against ranked opponents.
In singles, playing at the No. 2 position for Auburn, she picked up her highest-ranked win to date Friday, defeating South Carolina's 20th-ranked Megan Davies in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. She came back two days later against Florida and took down another ranked opponent, this time defeating No. 113 Victoria Emma in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, playing at the top spot with senior Taylor Russo to form the nation's ninth-ranked duo, she earned another ranked win over 56th-ranked Davies and Mia Horvit of South Carolina, 6-3, to help the Tigers clinch the doubles point in that match.
For the season, Ovunc is 21-6 overall in singles with an 8-1 mark in dual match play, and is 6-0 in her last six completed singles matches. She also boasts an 18-7 record in doubles with a 7-3 mark in dual match play.
Auburn returns to action this weekend on the road. The Tigers will face Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. CT Friday in Nashville, then take on Kentucky at 11 a.m. CT Sunday in Lexington.
