AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn Athletics' Advisory Task Force on Inclusion and Race Relations has issued its recommendations, reaffirming Auburn's commitment to positive action on race in America.

Auburn coaches, student-athletes, staff, alumni and members of the campus community comprised the 20-member task force, including Director of Athletics Allen Greene and Dr. Taffye Clayton, Auburn University vice president and associate provost for inclusion and diversity.

Commissioned by Greene in June, the task force focused on three areas: ensuring a safe space for critical conversations, providing holistic education on historic and current topics, and generating sustainable action items that support meaningful change.

"These recommendations will guide us as we strengthen an inclusive, united Auburn Athletics family," said Monique Holland, senior associate athletics director of student-athlete experience. "We've already begun implementing these conversations, educational sessions and action items to great effect."

"We are tremendously grateful to these task force members for giving their time, insights and perspectives as we seek ways to make everyone feel valued, understood and celebrated on our campus and in our athletics department," Greene said. "Inspired by the Auburn Creed's belief in the human touch, we are motivated by a desire and responsibility to foster a welcoming, affirming experience for all. We have a tremendous opportunity to make a difference while fulfilling our purpose of educating, supporting and developing Auburn women and men."

Co-chaired by Holland and Garry Morgan from Auburn University's Office of Inclusion and Diversity, the task force presented recommendations for the 2020-21 academic year to Greene, Auburn Athletics' executive leadership team and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Executive Summary

Auburn University Athletics Director, Allen Greene, commissioned the Advisory Task Force on Inclusion and Race Relations in June 2020 and charged the group to begin its work defining, discussing, and recommending tangible strategies for Auburn Athletics to reaffirm its commitment to positive action in the status of race in America. The 20-member Task Force met twice a week since June, focusing primarily on three principal charges:

  • Ensuring a safe space for critical conversations
  • Holistic education on historic and current topics
  • Sustainable action items that support meaningful change

The Task Force reviewed the charges in small working groups to develop plans that would ultimately support Auburn Athletics coaches, staff, student-athletes, and organizational culture. The Task Force spent significant time discussing organizational culture shifts to drive an openness to diversity that would encourage behavioral changes toward equity and inclusion.

Some of the recommendations are easily achievable; many, however, will take more time. Members of the Task Force understood that Auburn Athletics, similar to the rest of the country, is in a historic moment where race and inclusion are centered. This is an opportunity for Auburn to seize the moment, have a proactive approach, and become a national leader on matters of race and race relations. Organizationally, we strive for Auburn Athletics to foster a culture of unity fueled by empathy and vulnerability coupled with an expanded strategic commitment.

Success in achieving any of these goals depends both on realigning current resources and identifying new resources. With this in mind, the Task Force has set forth its highest priority recommendations (in no particular order) with the hope that they provide insight for the Athletics Director and his executive leadership team.

Note that while the Task Force worked through the recommendation process, Auburn Athletics jumped to action and as of late August 2020, initiated the following:
