AUBURN, Ala. – A pair of challenges awaits the Auburn women's tennis team this week as the Tigers host South Florida Friday morning then travel to Atlanta to face No. 6 Georgia Tech Sunday.
Friday's match will begin at 11 a.m. CT at the Yarbrough Tennis Center off Richland Road in Auburn. The match is scheduled to be played outdoors, and spectators are welcome to attend. All spectators must wear a face covering at all times and practice appropriate social distancing. Sunday's match at Georgia Tech will also begin at 11 a.m. CT.
"I expect South Florida to come in and compete really hard," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "They're definitely a team that can make us uncomfortable. And Georgia Tech's always good, a perennial top-10 team. We'll definitely be pushed. This is a really exciting weekend for Auburn women's tennis."
The Tigers (2-0) are coming off a 7-0 sweep of Samford in their first home match of the season last Friday in which they did not drop a set across eight singles and three doubles matches.
"It was good to see our girls compete at home," Lilley said. "It had been over 300 days since we had a home match. We've been working really hard, the girls have been incredibly committed. Samford pushed us and made us uncomfortable, which is always a good thing. It was great to see us play some really aggressive tennis as well."
South Florida is 0-2 following a pair of road losses at Florida State last week and Alabama on Thursday. The Bulls went 5-7 last season.
Georgia Tech enters their weekend at 3-0 after taking down No. 14 South Carolina and No. 6 Duke in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The match with Auburn was originally scheduled for Feb. 5 but moved to Sunday to accommodate the Yellow Jackets' qualifying for nationals. Tech features three ranked players in singles – No. 13 Kenya Jones, No. 56 Victoria Flores and No. 123 Gia Cohen – and the nation's No. 5-ranked doubles team in Jones and Flores.
