Malone breaks school mark at SEC Indoors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Auburn junior thrower Madi Malone for the third time during the 2021 indoor season broke her own school record in the weight throw en route to finishing third in the event during day one of the SEC Indoor Championships Thursday at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

A Wichita, Kan., native, Malone posted four of the five top throws in Auburn history during the meet, including the record breaker of 22.89m/71-1.25 on her fifth of six tosses. Malone's 22.89 gave her the lead in the event, but Ole Miss' Jasmine Mitchell and Shey Taiwo passed her on subsequent throws.

Junior Alex Spyridonidis and sophomore David Edmondson got out to great starts in the men's heptathlon as both posted first day PRs for points and collectively established eight personal bests. Spyridonidis is in third place with 3159 points while Edmondson is in eighth with 3000.

Sophomore Kyle Brown became the first Auburn men's thrower to score at SEC Indoors in back-to-back years at conference since Stephen Saenz in 2012-13 after finishing sixth in the weight throw with a PR of 21.17m/69-5.5. Brown, who finished fifth in the event last year recorded his 21.17 toss on his first attempt.

The Auburn women's distance medley relay of Faith Bett, Niya Benton-Andrews, Samantha Rogers and Abbey Zane posted the No. 8 time in Auburn history with a 11:31.69. It was also the fastest time ran by a Tiger quartet in 17 years.

Friday's action begins at 10 a.m. CT with the men's heptathlon 60m hurdles. Field events start at noon with the men's high jump and the track events start at 2 p.m. with the men's mile. The new SEC Indoor format will see the men competing during the day, while the women will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the high jump.

The meet will air live on SEC Network+ each day with a tape-delayed broadcast to be televised on the SEC Network, Sunday, February 28 at 7 p.m. CT. Live results for the 2021 SEC Indoor Championships can be found here.
