Shelby Lowe named SEC Freshman of the Week

AUBURN, Ala. – Picking up three wins in the circle during the Tigers' undefeated performance at the Auburn Invitational, freshman pitcher Shelby Lowe was selected Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
 
This marks the third time this season an Auburn freshman has brought home the award, setting the program record for most SEC Freshman of the Week honors in a single season. Lowe's selection also marks the first time in program history that multiple Auburn freshmen have won the award in the same season. Lowe's teammate in the circle Maddie Penta has earned the honor twice in 2021.
 
Lowe was the workhorse for Tigers in the circle during the Auburn Invitational as the left-handed pitcher earned three of Auburn's five wins. Lowe tossed 15.1 total innings and gave up just three walks while striking out a team-high 26 batters.
 
The Carrollton, Ala., native held opponents to a .167 average at the plate. She allowed just two earned runs off nine hits to close the weekend with a 0.91 earned run average.
 
Lowe began the weekend with a relief appearance against Troy, entering the then one-run game with two Trojans in scoring positions with two outs. Lowe forced a ground out to short to retire the side. She would go on to hold the Trojans hitless over 3.1 innings, striking out seven of the 12 batters she faced to earn an 8-1 victory.
 
In a complete-game performance against Southern Miss, Lowe struck out 11 and did not issue a free pass in her seven innings of work. It was her third double-digit strikeout performance of the season. She allowed one unearned run off five hits, ending her consecutive scoreless innings streak at 24.1 innings. The streak was the eighth longest in program history.
 
Her final win of the weekend came against Southeastern Louisiana. Lowe tossed five innings, allowing two runs off five hits. She walked two while striking out eight.
 
Lowe holds a 0.61 earned run average, ranking fourth in the SEC. She has allowed just three earned runs in 34.2 innings pitched. She has struck 56 while issuing just four walks to rank eighth in the country with a 14.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
