Auburn soccer celebrates 2020-21 season

AUBURN, Ala. – After wrapping up the 2020-21 season on a five-game winning streak and going 6-1-1 during the spring, Auburn soccer announced its end of the year awards.

As a team, the Tigers tied the program record for fewest goals allowed in a season (15) and turned in the second-best goals against average (0.78). Of the 15 goals allowed, only three were conceded during the spring season when the team outscored its opponents by 13.

Along with the team accolades, a list of individual award winners is included below.

Most Valuable Offensive Player: Anna Haddock

Most Valuable Defensive Player: Sarah Houchin

Rookie of the Year: Maddie Prohaska

Most Improved Player: Olivia Candelino

Barbara Camp Unsung Hero: Hannah Waesch – presented to the player who was crucial to the performance of the team and went under the radar.

Coaches' Award: Olivia Dedels – voted on by the coaching staff and based on a players' attitude and dedication.

Spirit Award: Maddy Bondon – awarded to the player who best represents Auburn soccer both on and off the field.

Captain Award: M.E. Craven, Sarah Houchin and Kori Locksley

Haddock finished her first season on The Plains as the SEC and Power 5 Conference leader with 10 assists, marking the most among freshmen nationally and the second most by an Auburn freshman since 2000. She matched the single-game program record with four assists against Kennesaw State to kick off the spring season on Feb. 19 and assisted in three straight contests to end the season.

Houchin was named Auburn's Most Valuable Defensive Player for the second straight season, leading a defensive unit that surrendered just 15 goals all season, including three in eight spring matches. Houchin not only played a vital role in turning in the league's second-best goals against average, but also contributed on the offensive end, scoring a pair of goals and adding a pair of assists. She finished her Auburn career by starting in all 77 games since stepping foot on campus in 2017.

An early enrollee last fall, Prohaska earned the Tigers' starting goalkeeper role from the get-go and helped lead the team to eight shutouts during the season, tied for the seventh best mark in program history. The West Chester, Ohio, native led the league with a 0.80 goals against average, the fourth lowest clip in program history. She also led the way with a .843 save percentage and ranked third with 75 saves. She was recognized by the league on four occasions throughout the season.

After playing sparingly during the fall season, Candelino was inserted into the team's starting lineup in the spring opener vs. Kennesaw State and wasted no time in scoring her first collegiate goal against the Owls. She started in all eight contests during the spring season and tied for the team lead with three goals, including a pair of game-winners against Georgia and South Alabama. The Jacksonville, Florida, native added an assist to register seven points in the final eight contests of her freshman year.
