SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Experience led the way for the Auburn women's golf team on the first day of the NCAA Louisville Regional as the squad finished round one in sixth place with a 296 (+8). The three-day tournament is being held at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
"Today was a bit of a practice round for us since we didn't get to practice yesterday because of storms in the area," head coach Melissa Luellen said. "We learned a few things and will make some adjustments for tomorrow.
"Experience is always helpful, and the upperclassmen were very patient today," Luellen added. "That is so important during this tournament. I would like to see a stronger finish on the last five holes these next two days. They can make or break you in team golf. We typically are very good at finishing strong, so this doable."
Senior Mychael O'Berry led the way for Auburn on day one, shooting an even 72 that included an eagle and two birdies overall. The Hoover, Ala. product kicked things off at 2-under par on the front nine, earning an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. She is currently tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard.
Seniors Kaleigh Telfer and Elena Hualde Zúñiga finished with a 73 (+1) and 74 (+2), respectively. The pair finished with two birdies apiece on the day, while Telfer put together an even 36 on the back nine to conclude the round strong. Telfer stands at tied for 17th overall, while Hualde Zúñiga is tied for 25th.
Rounding out the Auburn contingent was sophomore Megan Schofill and freshman Elina Sinz, who are both making the first NCAA appearances of their careers. Each are tied for 54th among the individual field with a 77 (+5).
Auburn was among the field's best in pars, having 60 on the day.
The Tigers tee off at 8 a.m. CT and will be paired with top-seeded South Carolina and host Louisville. Live action is available through golfstat.com.
