Tigers’ snag three event wins at Tennessee Challenge

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—Auburn recorded three event wins, including sweeping the men's and women's javelin throw during the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday at Tom Black Track on University of Tennessee campus.
 
Senior Nils Fischer won his third men's javelin event in as many competitions this outdoor season winning with a toss of 72.85m/239-0, the fifth best mark in school history. Dating back to his sophomore season in 2018, Fischer has won 10 of the last 12 events he has entered.
 
Teammate Keira McCarrell took gold on the women's side with a heave of 50.20m/164-8, while freshman Shaniya Holley was second with a best mark of 45.47m/149-2.
 
Freshman Destiny Charles won her first collegiate race, winning the women's 200m dash. Charles crossed 23.80, just seven one hundredths off her PR time of 23.73.
 
The Auburn men took home a pair of second and third place finishes in the 200m dash and 110m hurdles. Brandon Smiley was second in the men's 200m dash in a time of 21.18, while Jevony Murray was third in 21.25. Sophomore Oquendo Bernard and David Edmondson were second and third respectively in the 110m hurdles, finishing in 14.89 and 15.00, respectively.
 
Freshman Adam Strouf continued his successful rookie campaign, taking silver in the men's shot put with a toss of 18.22m/59-9.5. Strouf has medaled in three consecutive meets while posting his three best marks during the same time.
 
In the women's high jump, freshman Zatoria Thompson was second, while teammates Caroline Lawrence and Kamiya Dendy finished third and fourth. All three cleared 1.73m/5-8.
 
Sophomore Jocelynn Budwig also hit the medal stand with a second-place finish in the women's discus throw with a best mark of 48.91m/160-5.
 
The Tigers will have a week off before competing at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships, May 13-15, in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
