KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Auburn soccer senior captain Sarah Houchin has been named United Soccer Coaches Second Team Scholar All-Region for the South Region.

Houchin is one of three players from the Southeastern Conference to earn the distinction.

"Sarah is a true student-athlete," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "She excels on the field and in the classroom every day, so it is very fitting for her to be named a scholar all-region player. We are extremely proud of her."

To be eligible for scholar all-region recognition, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.40 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout their career, have started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contributed to their team, and be a junior or above in academic standing. A complete list of scholar all-region honorees can be found here.

Houchin graduated this spring with a degree in exercise science and a 3.78 cumulative GPA. She is a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a three-time member of both the Dean's List and AD Honor Roll.

Houchin was named Auburn's Most Valuable Defensive Player for the second straight season, leading a defensive unit that surrendered a record-matching 15 goals all season, including three in eight spring matches. She not only played a vital role in turning in the league's second-best goals against average, but also contributed on the offensive end, scoring a pair of goals and adding a pair of assists on the year.

The Coppell, Texas, native finished her Auburn career by starting in all 77 games since stepping foot on campus in 2017. She was named a Second Team All-SEC defender last fall.
