ORLANDO, Fla. – Auburn sophomore Selin Ovunc saw her run through the NCAA Singles Championship come to an end Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-0 loss to LSU's Paris Corley.
By advancing to the Round of 16, Ovunc became the second All-American in singles in Auburn women's tennis history, the first under head coach Caroline Lilley. She is the seventh overall Auburn All-American in women's tennis.
"Selin came to Orlando unsure, and is leaving the NCAA Tournament with a new level of commitment and determination to remain persistent in her pursuit of excellence," Lilley said. "What an incredible ride! A heck of a chapter has been written, one to remember, but the rest of her journey lies ahead."
The two stayed even through eight games; both picked up breaks early and were even at 4-all. But Corley broke serve to make it 5-4, then held to secure the first set, 6-4. Set two, however, was all Corley as she put the match away with a 6-0 second-set win to secure her spot in the quarterfinals.
Ovunc finished her sophomore season with an overall singles record of 15-11, playing at the No. 1 spot throughout the spring season. She is the second Auburn player to advance past the second round at the national championship tournament, joining Fani Chifchieva, who made the semifinals in 2008.
