Bologna, ITALY - Off the heels of leading Team Italy to its second straight Women's Softball European Championship, former three-time All-American at Auburn and current Auburn softball assistant coach Emily Carosone was named to the official Olympic roster by the Italian Baseball Softball Federation on Sunday.
Carosone will be Auburn's first Olympian in softball. A four-year letterman at Auburn (2013-16), the Orlando, Fla., native was a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American and All-Southeastern Conference performer.
She lifted Auburn softball to new heights and countless program firsts. She helped capture the 2015 and 2016 SEC Softball Tournament titles, winning the tournament's Most Valuable Player award in both appearances. Carosone also led the Tigers to back-to-back Women's College World Series appearances.
Carosone is Auburn's all-time leader in career batting average (.406), hits (285), runs (267), on-base percentage (.534) and hit by pitches (85). She also ranks in the top three in career RBI, doubles, home runs, slugging percentage and games started. Carosone holds Auburn's single-season records for runs, slugging percentage and hit by pitch.
She was named Auburn's assistant coach in July of 2020.
Competing with Team Italy at the European Championship this past week, Carosone lifted Italy to the gold medal as she drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a bases-loaded single in the second inning. Italy went on to defeat the Netherlands for the federation's 12th European Championship.
Carosone started nine of Italy's 11 games at the European Championship, splitting time as designated player and at second base. She batted .474 with nine hits in 19 at-bats, including three doubles for a .632 slugging clip. She added 12 runs scored and six RBI. Carosone closed the championship with a .643 on-base percentage, reaching safely in 18 of her 28 plate appearances.
Italy clinched a spot for the Tokyo Olympics after winning the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic qualifier and will open the games against the United States on Tuesday, July 20 at 10 p.m. CT.
