TOKYO, Japan – In the final swimming event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Zach Apple and Team USA set a new world record Sunday morning to win the men's 4x100 medley relay and claim the gold medal. The team finished in 3:26.78.
It was the second gold of the Tokyo Games for Apple who swam the final leg, the freestyle leg, in 46.95. He also anchored the winning men's 4x100 freestyle relay earlier in the week.
Apple swam three seasons at Auburn and was a 13-time All-American. He still holds the fastest time in program history in the 200 freestyle and is second-fastest in the 100 freestyle.
With Apple's two gold medals and a bronze medal from Annie Lazor in the women's 200 breaststroke, the Auburn group in Tokyo accounted for three total medals at this year's Olympic Games. They swam in a total of six finals, including four relays.
Auburn's all-time medal count in swimming at the Olympics is now up to 35.
