MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Auburn women's golf team opened the Moon Golf Invitational on Sunday with a round of 295 (+7) and is currently tied for seventh place.
Senior Julie McCarthy had the low round of the day for the Tigers, shooting a 3-under 69 with five birdies. Playing as an individual, her score didn't count toward the team score, but she's currently tied for third on the individual leaderboard. For McCarthy, it was her lowest round since she carded a 68 (-4) at the 2019 SEC Championships.
"A beautiful round for Julie," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said.
Fellow senior Mychael O'Berry also shot under par for the Tigers, finishing at 1-under, while sophomore Anna Foster continued her strong play with an even-par 72. The two combined to make seven birdies. O'Berry is tied for eighth, and Foster is in a tie for 11th.
"Solid rounds from Mychael and Anna," added Luellen. "We had some rough Par 5 scoring and a poor finish on the last few holes. This is not the norm for this bunch. Tomorrow is moving day, and we need to show up. We must remain disciplined and not force the birdies. Just need to put ourselves into position, and the putts will drop."
Kaleigh Telfer started strong with three birdies through the first six holes, but the senior finished the day at 3-over and is tied for 39th individually.
The trio of Megan Schofill, Elina Sinz and Morgan Jones all shot 77 (+5) for the Tigers in the first round and are tied together in 56th place. Like McCarthy, Jones is also playing as an individual this week. It's her second collegiate tournament.
On the team leaderboard, it was Florida State who jumped out to the early lead at 2-under (286), followed by Virginia (287), Florida (291), Louisville (291), LSU (292), UCF (292), Auburn (295), South Carolina (295), Arkansas (296), Alabama (297), North Carolina (298), Baylor (301), Augusta (302), Duke (304) and Miami (307).
Auburn will be paired with Arkansas and South Carolina for round two and will tee off Monday beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
